U-15 CHALLENGE FINAL:OMAN WIN AT A CANTER

Source=http://www.asiancricket.org

Oman won the ACC U-15 Challenge Cup, defeating Bhutan by 8 wickets at the Royal Bangkok Sports Club Polo Grounds.

"The boys played very well and thoroughly deserved their victory. They are the future of cricket in Oman and with this victory will go on to even greater things," said Oman Manager Madhu Sampat.

The start of the match was delayed by half an hour because of wet patches on the square due to morning dew. Bhutan chose to bat, hoping for a big enough score to defend in the afternoon. On a drying wicket, their spinners could be particularly effective. But 'no plan survives contact with the enemy.'

Tahar Shah looking to dismiss Sanjeev Gurung just the same way as in Chiang Mai a week earlier, opened with a bouncer which the startled Sanjeev Gurung spooned just behind square with no fielder nearby. Oman were obviously up for it from the start, and apart from the opening ball lapse, had a well-worked out strategy for the batsmen. Both Shah and Karthik kept the ball up to the bat and had Bhutan's batsmen on the defensive from the outset. Bhutan were 9 for 0 after 5 overs.

Left-arm spinner Nikhil Xavier came on in the seventh over. With his second ball he had Thinley Wangchuk pinned on the back-foot, for 2 off 19 balls. Abu Saud, Oman's second left-arm spinner came on at the end.

Bhutan 's first boundary, hit by Sanjeev Gurung only came in the 11th over. Gurung looked to be getting the measure of the spinners at this stage – but going back is fatal on this wicket as Kencho Norbu found, when Nikhil bowled him shin-high to the stumps. 29 for 2 off 12.3.

Nikhil Xavier bowls a chinaman

The two left-arm spinners made an ideal combination- Xavier landing on a teasing length with each delivery, with the occasional 'chinaman' turned the ball in fast and low. Bhutan's batsmen, try as they might, were unable to get any purchase on their shots. The situation called out for one batsman, any batsman to play in a manner to upset Xavier's metronomic rhythm but none could do so. "He's a coach's favourite," said Oman's coach Rajinder Singh.

From the other end, Abu Saud bowled with plenty of variation, "too much sometimes!" says his coach. Slower in the air than Xavier, with more flight, Saud's a crafty operator. He'd taken 3 for 1 in Chiang Mai against Bhutan and "it's his ball that floats up, lands on a length and draws you into the drive that's the tricky ball," says Bhutan's coach Damber Singh Gurung, "it zips through keeps low and can get you between bat and pad as you drive."

It was just such a ball that did for Bhutan's best batsman, Jigme Singye. He had made just 2 and with his fall, the gates were open. From 34 for 4 in the 20 th over, Bhutan just faded away.

Oman's coach Rajinder Singh lets his captain know how Bhutan could have been dismissed for even less

Rajinder Singh briefs his opening batsmen

Oman's spinners pecked at the batsmen, their infielders were outstanding and batsman after batsman was pinned on the crease, leg-before or bowled. On the rare occasions they tried anything aggressive, they were pouched inside the circle. Just one more four was struck by Bhutan as they finished on 67 after 33.4 overs

When they played in Chiang Mai, Bhutan had bowled Oman out for 106 (including 30 extras). Bhutan are a far stronger bowling side than batting, but surely 67 wasn't enough to defend.

Initially, however, bar a couple of flowing off-drives from the tall Suneet Fernandes, Oman's batsmen were unable to impose themselves against Bhutan's impressive new-ball bowlers. But they did enough. The good balls were kept out. Half of Oman's first 20 runs came from extras.

Fernandes, after hitting the shot of the day through mid-off then miscued an on-drive just out of reach of the one leg-side fielder in front of square and with that escape, Oman's grip on the cup tightened.

Akhilesh Iyer was dropped at square-leg pulling a full-toss from Jigme Singye, to compound Bhutan's woes. Three balls later Fernandes was out, caught at point. But it was too late. Oman's captain Luvieen Alva came in and made batting look easy until he spooned a googly back to Singye with the score on 51.

Bhutan presented with the Runners-up Trophy by CAT Chairman Ravi Sehgal

Akhilesh Iyer was then dropped three balls later by the wicket-keeper Kencho Norbu off Thinley – by his standards an incredible miss. Abu Saud, collar-up and looking every inch the batsman, hit two fours off his first three balls to take Oman to within six of victory. The scores were tied when Saud slammed a chance back to Singye but even if it had stuck Oman were always going to win. They did, next ball.

Bhutan Set Final date with Oman

Oman had the easier semi final against Iran, especially after they bowled them out for just 57, with Nikhil Xavier taking 3/12 and Suneet Fernandes taking 4/13. The target was no problem for Oman and they reached it in their eighth over for the loss of just one wicket.

It appeared Thailand would have a similarly simple run chase after bowling Bhutan out for 120. But the match proved to be much closer as captain Jigme Singye ripped through the Thai batting order with 5 wickets for 11 runs with his leg-spin. The last wicket pair came together with the score at 87/9 and 34 runs needed for victory. They threatened to pull off the victory for a while, but were dismissed for 104, Bhutan winning by 16 runs.

Iran and Thailand now have the consolation of Today third place play-off whilst Oman and Bhutan will meet in Saturday's final.

BHUTAN VAULT OVER THAILAND

Bhutan won a tense, thrilling encounter with Thailand by 16 runs to qualify for the Final of the U-15 Challenge Cup to play against Oman on 23rd December 2006.

Put into bat on a wicket damp with morning dew, Bhutan were made to struggle by Thailand’s dependably excellent new-ball bowlers. “Our target was 150″, said Bhutan’s coach Damber Singh Gurung, “it was going to give our fast-bowlers and spinners something to work with.”

The first wicket ground their way to 37 before Kinley Wangchuck was adjudged lbw in the 11 th over. All of the batsmen struggled apart from Thinley Jamtsho who hit 30 off 24 balls (4 fours, 1 six). He was bowled by one that kept low from medium-pacer Deepanshu Kalra.

Thinley Jamtsho heads back to the pavilion after scoring 30 against Thailand

Wanchana Uisuk and Vihar Shah were on the money as ever and once the new ball lost its shine, Kshitij Jhaveri with loop and dip, raced through his eight overs to finish with 2-10. Lakshmi Gajmer having hit a huge six over midwicket was out three balls later, swinging blindly at Ishan Kalra. Anand Chettri having made 10, woke up after 57 balls, hitting two consecutive fours off before he sliced Vihar Shah to cover where Shreyanshu Tewari held a good catch running back.

Bhutan’s 120 off 38.3 was below par but still challenging enough to ask some searching questions of the Thai batsmen. Particularly when they were going to be up against a new-ball attack of the quality of Bhutan.

Thinley Jamtsho and Dilip Subba came in hard, and though wides spoilt their efforts, their contest against a watchful Wanchana Uisuk and a belligerent Arnab Chaudhuri was compelling viewing.

Uisuk edged Dilip Subba twice, evading first slip each time. Chaudhuri thumped a four at the start of the seventh over - the ball flying through Jamtsho’s hands, the umpire taking evasive action and bouncing back from the sightscreen moments after it left the bat. After seven overs Thailand were 35 for no loss and on course for victory.

Bhutan had to take wickets. The fast bowlers had to strike and once Uisuk was pinned on the back foot by Subba, the pad blocking the ball’s trajectory onto leg stump, Bhutan sensed an opening. 40-1.

Lakshmi Prasad, Bhutan’s craftiest bowler (two Man of the Match awards in the tournament so far), replaced Jamthso from the Clubhouse End. Game on. Arnab Chaudhuri was bowled middle stump by Gajmer. 47-2. Thailand’s hard-hitting captain Shreyanshu Tewari came in. A direct throw by Narbahadur from mid-on ran-out Tewari at the bowler’s end. 47-3. Game very much on.

Subba appealed loud and hard for leg-before against Peerawat Duangthip, who’s played for the senior team already but Umpire Khalilulallah after due consideration, shook his head.

With 28 overs to go, Thailand needed just 73. Bhutan needed 7 wickets. Jai Bhagwat ran himself out: Peerawat hit the ball to point, Bhagwat called and came all the way down the wicket. 56-4.

A pulled six over extra-cover next over, the shot of the day, by Duangthip off Gajmer oozed class and composure. Joined at the wicket by fellow Chiang Maian Thanathip Jeerapanthawong, their partnership was going to be critical.

Bhutan’s captain, Jigme Singye brought himself on. Two wides a dot-ball and a perfectly pitched leg-break later, Duangthip was caught and bowled. 70-5. The ball was spinning a yard.

Prasad kept his end sown up. The lanky Singye switched to round-the-wicket. Plenty of flight, fast, fizzing dip. The batsmen survived close call after close call.

Such has been Thailand’s progress in this tournament that the tail has never needed to bat. It had to, once Ishan Kalra who had never been out so far in the competition, edged Gajmer to Singye at first slip. 75 for 6.

Kalra falls

Thanathit having spanked a four through square leg was lbw to Singye’s googly two balls later. 81 for 7.

Thailand in a slump

Deepanshu Kalra fell at 87, caught and bowled by Singye. Jhaveri was caught at point next ball. Prasad finished with 8-0-23-2, doing much with Singye to keep the pressure constantly on the batsmen.

Jigme Singye (without cap) having taken another Thai wicket

The last-wicket pair came together at the start of the 24 th over. Vihar Shah and Yotsakorn Chaiprom played soundly and kept the scoreboard moving. Singye kept threatening. Shah, bat and pad together, stretched forward and played late. Chaiprom hit anything he could to leg.

100 was passed in the in 26th over. With the score on 104, Yotsakorn played back to Jigme Singye’s googly and was plumb.

Jigme Singye, with Bhutan’s Coach Damber Singh Gurung behind him

It’s a great game this, cricket. Thailand were likely winners for most of the match, only to slump at the last to a gutsy Bhutan. In spite of this loss, they remain a talented team and if success is a process, they are on their way to greater competitive glory.

Bhutan , after years of dedication and being also-rans now play in their first competitive final, will play Oman at the Polo grounds on Saturday. A tremendous achievement in itself, but they are looking to win.

BHUTAN LOST TO QATAR, BUT STILL MAKES TO SEMI FINAL

Bhutan in the semi final of ACC U15 Challange Cup 2006, Thailand despite losing to Qatar.

A skillful game of cricket ended today, at Prem Tinsulanonda ground, in Qatar's favour, as they ran out easy winners over Bhutan by 101 runs: a score that may not highlight the expertness of the Bhutanese bowling execution today.

Sajjad drives majestically for a boundary

Coming into this game, Bhutan knew the opposition inside out, especially Tamoor Sajjad (37), and the damage he can cause. What would have been a turning point in the game occurred in only the second ball when Sajjad, uncharacteristically, nicked a ball to the slips. The speed of pace man Thinley Jamtsho (0-34), plus the touch, was a little too much for Captain Jigme Singye in the slips as he squandered, what was, a vital chance.

Thinley Jamthso

The opening overs saw Qatar face, undoubtedly, their toughest bowling attack, as Jamtsho and Dilip Subba (0-29) bowled out of their skins to contain the batsmen. Sajjad and Mohammed Taha (18) were held down, maybe even a little surprised, by the pace and accuracy from Bhutan, as Qatar were now tested for the first time in this tournament.

The bowling of Bhutan may have been close to perfection at the start but the fielding, at times, let them down. A clear run out opportunity missed and a few fielding errors that led to boundaries would've been something they could've tightened up on.

Lakshmi Prasad Kami: Bowling over opponents

Although these errors were committed, the energy levels of the Bhutanese never dimmed. The on-field buzz saw results when the change in bowling attack put Qatar in a tight spot when Lakshmi Kami (4-36) , after his five-wicket haul in the previous game, picked up two wickets in consecutive balls and Pema Thinley (3-48), got one, in their opening overs.

The jubilation of the previous three wickets was nothing in comparison to when Thinley trapped danger-man Sajjad LBW soon after with the score at 64-4.

Bhutan celebrate the wicket of Sajjad

The first batting highlight in the game came when Fahad Ghulam (81) slammed three fours in one over. Bhutan were definitely not going to be outdone after all their work and Thinley and Kami bounced back to take one and two more wickets respectively.

Ghulam rushes for a second run

From here on in, the innings turned slowly in favour of Qatar as Ghulam smashed twelve fours and two sixes to get his total score from 68 balls and along with Abdul Rehman (24) put on, what was most definitely, the match-winning 91 – run partnership. Qatar soon went on to lose those two wickets and finished, considering how they started, at a very satisfying 213 – 9 in 40 overs.

Qatar Captain Tamoor Sajjad

Bhutan are a team not well-known for their batting performances and this showed when Kinley Wangchuk (0) fell in only the second over, courtesy of a well-taken catch in the slips by Captain Tamoor Sajjad. Sanjeevan Gurung (9) and Kencho Norbu (22) were the masterminds behind some beautiful stroke play before Norbu fell victim to the spot-on bowling of Pradeep Kumar (1-19).

Beautiful shots may have been present, but Bhutan would've preferred it if their batsmen stayed long enough to play more like them – a combination of very good and very poor batting all at once. Two quick wickets fell as Thinley Jamtsho (1) was bowled by Sajjad (3-19) and Norbu was unluckily dismissed when his bat may have nicked the ground and not the ball as he was given out caught behind.

Bhutanese Captain Jigme Singye (25) and Anand Chettri (8) made a quick fire 31-run partnership as Singye made his score of a speedy 16 balls. None of the lower order batsmen were able to put in any strong performances and Bhutan were once again all bowled out. This time the bottom order collapsed to both Sajjad and Ali Ishtiaq (3-18) in the next seven overs for a total score of 112 after 23 overs leaving Qatar the winners by 101 runs.

Fahad Ghulam: A match-winner

For a match-winning contribution of 81 runs, Fahad Ghulam took home the Man of the Match award.

BHUTAN SEND BRUNEI PACKING

Bhutan easily closed the game against Brunei winning by 9 wickets in a match completely dominated by the sheer bowling genius of Lakshmi Prasad Kami.

After their eight wicket collapse against Oman, Bhutan were determined to win today against Brunei. They started well.

Akhshar Mody fell to the very first delivery of the game, leg before to a ball which, pitching on middle and climbing, may actually have been going over the stumps.

The Bhutanese pace-men have been bowling consistently well throughout this tournament, showing blistering pace coupled with good line and length. They took another wicket in the fourth over when Mahbub Shavez (4) was caught napping in front of the wicket when the ball hit his pads. The Brunei batsman were finding it hard just to connect bat onto ball.

With the batsmen playing away from the body and turning sideways awkwardly to avoid the ball hitting them, they were demonstrably in fear of the pace-bowlers, unfortunately. This was projected by the runs scored in the early overs. None of them had come from any positive stroke. Most were either byes or extras with the batsmen only managing a few odd singles.

An overly often incident

Kami – The destroyer
It was through this cautious kind of play that Brunei lost their third. Rahat Mahbub (2) left a massive gap between bat and pad as the ball crashed through his unprotected wickets. Brunei, were once again, doing all they could to bat the entire 40 overs and the run rate at the end of the fifteenth over was a low 1.93. In such a situation there's only so long a batsman can hang on playing safe and when Rajeev Jayakumar (4) went on the offensive for a drive, he had his stumps uprooted.
Kami delivered both speed and accuracy

With the pace-men finishing their eight overs on the trot, spinners Jigme Singye (1-2) and Lakshmi Kami (5-0) were brought in to bowl. Singye dismissed Abhishek Gurung (0) in his very first over. Singye's high flight of the ball was enough to tempt the new batsman as he was stranded out of his crease to be stumped. Even flinging his bat to get back safe wasn't enough to save him from getting out. Kami, got in the action with five wickets in his first two overs to knock off the Brunei batsmen as they finished off at 33 after 21.2 overs.

The game turned out to be a no-contest as Bhutan won the game in four overs. They now face their biggest test when they play Qatar, who is without doubt, the strongest side of this group, tomorrow at the Prem Tinsulanonda ground.

Man of the Match: Lakshmi Prasad Kami

Five wickets and no runs conceded was reason enough for Lakshmi Prasad Kami to collect his first Man of the Match award of this tournament.
